After much procrastination (years) I have finally rolled up my sleeves and made a blog. As much as I would love to post rock climbing videos each and every day, I want this blog to be of as much help to new and aspiring writers as it can be.
I’ve been in the writing profession nearly 7 years now. It’s been a hell of a ride, and I must say, it was a lot harder than I thought it was going to be. But to all those die hard fans of raw fantasy and adventure, and especially to those who dream of creating their own worlds and telling their own stories . . .
It’s definitely worth it.
So I wanted to start this blog off (though I’ve already posted about climbing heh) with something that I learned along the way. This post should really help those who want to dive deep into new fantasy worlds and how to build their own. What you need to know when you’re building your own fantasy world is that there are 4 starting points.
1. Setting
2. History
3. Plot
4. Characters
I would generally say that you should start creating them in that order, but that isn’t too important, although setting should always come first. It establishes the basis for where you are going, and makes your life easier.
People think that building a fantasy world is all fantastical (mythical beasts, legendary swords, ETC) and although these things are important (and the most fun) they are not what makes a true fantasy world brilliant.
What you should be searching for, is Depth.
Depth. Depth. Depth.
Depth is what makes the world real. It is what makes the culture a culture, and the traditions memorable. Most of these things will come from crafting a good history of your world, or your own mythos (if you want to take Tolkien’s approach). With good depth, your world will come to life and so many things you could have never originally imagined to accompany your mythical beast and legendary sword will suddenly find themselves breathing within your story.
If anyone wants me to further explain any of these 4 points, feel free to comment and I will write another blog hyper-focusing one of them. Just remember that these are a good place to start, and these 4 areas will definitely bring the depth you need to solidify a solid fantasy world to place your story into.
Cheers and the best of luck to all of you,
